Story, procedure and menus behind Avani Avittam

Upakarma a ritual followed by the men in Brahmin Community, change their holy thread (Poonul/Yagnopaveetham). It is sacred to the Brahmins, who have been invested with the sacred thread.

When the Brahmin boy is invested with this holy thread, symbolically his third eye, or the eye of wisdom, is opened. This festival of Upakarma reminds the wearer of the sacred thread of its glorious spiritual significance.

This year Avani Avittam is celebrated on August, 15th 2019.

The learners of Yajur Veda and RigVeda celebrate Upakarma in the month of Shravana (Avani in Tamil month), while Sama Veda learners celebrate on Ganesh Chathurthi. ஆவணி அவிட்டம் (Avani Avittam) falls in Shravana Poornima on the same day as Raksha Bhandan.

Men offer sradhha to the Rishi's who composed the Vedic Hymns. The ones who are eligible to perform Avani Avittam are Bramachari, Gruhasta, Vanaprastha. Bhramachari who are to perform Avani Avittam for the first time after their Upanyasam, is called Thalai Avani Avittam.

Procedure:

Men go to temple after bath to do Sandhyavandhanam, Samithadaanam (only Bramachari), Kaamokaarsheet Japam, Madhyaahnikam, Brahmayajnam, Mahasankalpam. After taking dip in water again Holy Thread is changed and performs Kaandarishi Tarpanam, Vedarambam. The male members are invited with aarthi when they come back home.

The next day after taking bath Gayathri Japam is chanted 1008 times.

Story behind Avani Avittam

Lord Brahma, the creator was filled with pride for knowing the entire Veda. Lord Vishnu to crush his pride created two demons to steal Vedas from him. Brahma then not being able to save Vedas, he asked Vishnu to help him restore it. Lord Vishnu then assumed the form of Hayagriva and restored the Vedas and crubbed the pride of Brahma. This day is celebrated as Upakarma(Beginning) is also called as Hayagriva utpatti. Restoration of Vedas is known as a mark of new beginning and hence Upakarama is celebrated.
